The Cardiac Yoga® Teacher’s Training Program is a comprehensive certification program that is designed to educate and train yoga teachers and medical personnel to work with heart patients and their spouses in the area of stress management and yoga. Participants in this program learn to adapt the basic concepts of yoga and meditation to the special needs of cardiac patients. The curriculum for this competency-based program covers the following areas:
- training in the anatomy and physiology of the heart, risk factors, and an understanding of heart disease,
- training in the modification of yoga postures, breathing, deep relaxation, and guided imagery for heart patients,
- guidelines on how to design, implement, and market a Cardiac Yoga class
- education in the psycho-social and emotional aspects of heart disease, and
- training in the principles and philosophy of mind-body medicine.
The Cardiac Yoga Teacher’s Training Program includes both didactic and experiential components. The overall goal of the program is to train and educate individuals to teach stress management, yoga, and lifestyle change programs to cardiac patients within a medical setting, yoga organization or privately. All participants who successfully complete the training program and pass the competency test will receive certification as a Cardiac Yoga instructor. This course is recognized and accepted as an elective toward the 500 hour Yoga Alliance credentialing process.
This training program is appropriate for the continuing education of health care professionals from a variety of fields including: exercise physiologists, nurses, cardiac rehab staff, physicians, and occupational therapists as well as yoga instructors. Learn more

Meet Mala Cunningham, Ph.D
The main presenter of this program is M. Mala Cunningham, Ph.D. Dr. Cunningham is the President of Positive Health Solutions and is the Founder andDirector of the Cardiac Yoga Teacher Training Programs and retreats. She is also a Counseling Psychologist in private practice in Charlottesville, Va. and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia Nursing School.
She previously worked as the psychologist for the University of Virginia Cardiac Rehab Center and worked with heart patients in the area of cardiac psychology, stress management, and cardiac yoga. Dr. Cunningham served for three years on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehab. and has worked with heart patients since 1983. Since the 1970’s Dr. Cunningham has been involved in research and clinical work related to mind-body medicine. She also previously served as the Director for the committee on Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the University of Virginia Medical Center and initiated an educational series on Complementary Medicine at the Univ. of Virginia.
Dr. Cunningham has certification in Auricular Acupuncture and she is a certified yoga teacher from two traditions. She has practiced and taught hatha yoga and meditation for over 35 years and has developed specialized programs in Yoga and Psychotherapy, Peer Counseling, Yoga Therapy, the Chakras and Healing Energies, and Cardiac Yoga. Dr. Cunningham has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally and is a widely recognized authority on alternative health, stress management, yoga & psychotherapy, and cardiac yoga.
Dr. Dennis DeSilvey, M.D.
The medical faculty for this program is Dr. Dennis DeSilvey, M.D. who is a Cardiologist in practice for over 30 years. He specializes in health prevention and is an avid runner and long term practitioner of spirituality.
